Here is a post from two students who participated in the Eric Wilson presentation last month.
Eric Wilson
Eric Wilson is a Canadian author who writes mysteries for young readers. He so far has 22 books in print and is currently working on his next, Yukon Zombie. He has written 27 novels. His first story, Fat Boy Speeding, was written as an attempt to get his class to like reading. His class loved his book enough to convince him to get it published. Surprisingly enough, he actually had Fat Boy Speeding along with his next 4 novels rejected, before he learned to start making a plan for each of his books and research background information. He now visits every location he writes about such as the Arctic. The first story that he wrote that was accepted by the publishers was Murder on the Canadian.
It was really interesting hearing Mr. Wilson describe how he prepares for and writes a book. He stressed the benefits of planning, research and persistence for an author and gave everyone valuable insight into his life. He was humourous and had lots of good stories to tell, along with slides of different places he has visited. We know that many kids were inspired!
